Topic One: Introduction to orthopedic nursing

what is orthopedics?
its derived from two greek word ortho-meaning straight or erect and pedic meaning child
•Field of medicine concerned with study and treatment of musculoskeletal system.
it Deals with correction of disorders and deformities related to musculoskeletal system
orthopedic nursing
Orthopedic Nursing is a specialty focused on prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders using the appropriate and scientific based nursing care
•orthopedic nusring has been acknowledged  as a speciality within nursing since the early part of 20th century
however changes over the past  decade have impacted on the speciality and the need for some traditional  orthopedic skills has changed. as surgical techniques improves and lenght of admission decreases, the type of care required by orthopedic patients has changed, often meaning they no longer require lenghty period of rest on traction. this has had an implication on the knowldge and skills of an orthopedic nurse, however these changes are not uniform and have occured throughout orthopedics units around the world
ressearch should be carried out to identify what nurses should consider important aspect of being an orthopedic nurse,a description of experience of being an orthopedic nurse, an advocate of being a speciality in  nursing.
as some aspect of orthopedic nursing changes, its important for orthopedic nurses to articulate   there role in health care system especially here in kenya as we have seen the surge of patients with fractures due to bodaboda transport system.
