Optometry training was started at Kenya Medical Training College Nairobi in 2006.  It was housed by Occupational Therapy and developed under their support. The department has so far trained more than 160 optometrists who are all working in the private sector. The need for optometry training came from lack of enough trained personnel in this field. The few who were trained came from other countries and mostly worked in the major towns and private clinics. The country needed personnel to reach the citizens in county levels of the country. The demand for optometrists still exists in all sectors.
